Turkish-German cultural appreciation!

So...

Sixth graders: I showed you Döner Kebab the other day.

Then I told you about Ayran, the salted yogurt drink that people have when they eat Döner.

Well, if you go down to the European Grocery Store on Fruitville Pike in Lancaster, buy some Ayran (no more than a dollar or so), and try it, I'll give you extra credit. Just document yourself drinking it, tell me about it, and you'll get credit.

Why?

Because trying new things, especially things from outside the culture you're familiar with, is important. ;-)

Parent night.

It was awesome to meet so many parents last night at Parent's Night! 6th grade raffle winners will be posted soon. I decided it probably wouldn't be the best idea to put up the winners' names on the interweb... ;-)

All prizes *have* been awarded. Thanks for playing!

More Notes!

Notes on 'kommen' and 'Wie geht's?' can be found here if you lost the study guide.

MORE ALPHABET STUFF!

So...we threw in diphthongs today. Diphthongs are two vowels that are put together to produce a new vowel sound. The ones we went over were:

ei - "eye" like in Heidi Einstein, mein, dein, nein

ie - like in Justin Bieber or Wien, the capital of Austria (pronounced 'veen')

au - pronounced 'ow' as in autsch!!! (ouch)

eu - pronounced "oy" like in oy vey... Deutsch! Euro! Neuschwanstein!

DAS ALPHABET

I've been getting a lot of requests to hear the German alphabet pronounced for practice. Here's a cheat sheet:

Also, here's a pronunciation guide:

Once you get the names of the letters down, plug them into the song we practiced in class and you're good to go!
